September... A Month for Pet Observances

Pets and fun are synonymous.  That’s why it’s interesting to see what types of events are being offered in your local community for you and your furry friends. The month of September has a lot to offer pets and their guardians.  In fact, you’re likely to be out and about a lot during the fall because there is so much to celebrate!

Some of the events that are happening across the country are:

Second Sunday: National Pet Memorial Day

While this one isn’t exactly fun, it’s a day in which family members can remember a pet that has passed and they miss very much.

4th Week of September, National Dog Week

Man’s best friend deserves their own holiday and so instead of just one day, they get the entire week to have fun!  Check your local area to see what fun things are in store for this week.  If there aren’t any, plan some of your own!

Last Full Week of September: Deaf Pet Awareness Week

This week is dedicated to all pets who are deaf and considered special needs pets.  They are just as intelligent as hearing pets and do make wonderful pets in homes with kids and other animals.  The only difference is that you don’t want to let these roam freely unless you keep a close eye on them or they're in an enclosed area.  We have an adorable friend named Noni who is an absolutely precious, white, sweet, playful and unusually small pit. She has been deaf since birth, but her owner has trained her brilliantly. She responds to hand signals and is one of the most well-behaved, friendly and playful doggies we know! This week is dedicated to those who most of the time end up in animal shelters and other animal rescue centers.

September 23, 2013 – Checkers Day (also known as Dogs in Politics Day)

This is an obscure day and on this day people acknowledge and recognize those who have had dogs who are in politics.  The most recognized, of course, are those who had dogs while being President, Vice-President, and some acknowledge local politicians and their dogs.  The holiday is yet another reason to have fun with your four-legged friend and who really needs another reason right?  Every day is a celebration when you have pets!

September 28, 2013:  World Rabies Day

Sponsored by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, this occasion was founded to raise awareness of the impact of human and animal rabies and how easy it is to prevent.  This is more for educational purposes, but if you can plan a way to make a party or festival out of it in your own way, no one will stop you.  In fact, they just might join in with you!

These events are just a few of the ones you’ll find happening in your area.  A web search can help you discover even more opportunities to get out and about with your pet.  You don’t want to miss out on additional reasons to have fun, now do you?  So email, use social media or call about opportunities in your city.
